Raffaele’s Pizza

by Cathy Keturatana

It would be an understatement to describe Raffaele’s Pizza as a family-operated restaurant. As a child, the current owner, Bill Burns, would go to Raffaele’s after school to visit his father, eat pizza, and watch baseball games. When he was a teenager, he began working there and his first job was to watch the ovens. Eventually, he took over the kitchen. In 2009, Burns took ownership.

Raffaele’s opened in 1974, and Burns’ father starting working there in 1976. The original owner, Raffaele Aquino, is no longer a partner in the business, but he and his family still visit regularly for pizza and sometimes stop by to get ingredients to make their own meals at home.

Raffaele’s has been a staple of 19 North for more than 42 years. Many residents, like Burns, grew up eating there and now bring their own families to dine at Raffaele’s. Previous regulars who have moved out of Phoenix still make sure to visit when they are in town. Burns estimates that 70% of his customers eat at Raffaele’s at least twice each week, and a few of them come for both lunch and dinner. Out of respect for Raffaele’s loyal clientele, when Burns took ownership the only change he made to the menu was to add french fries, onion rings, and chicken strips.

Although known for their Sicilian pizza, Burns thinks the best thing on the menu is Raffaele’s regular style cheese pizza. As Raffaele himself said, “If it ain’t good cheese pizza, it ain’t good pizza.”

Raffaele’s is open Tuesday – Thursday from 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. – 10 p.m. They have lunch specials daily until 2:30 p.m. and also offer a separate catering menu and local delivery.  Stop on by!

Los Compadres

By Monica Merenda

Located just west of 19th Avenue on Northern Avenue, in the heart of 19 NORTH, resides one of Phoenix’s hidden gems and beloved Mexican restaurants, Los Compadres. If you are a Phoenix native, it is very likely you have frequented either one, or both, of the two longstanding locations.

Los Compadres on Northern has been a neighborhood staple for over 30 years. If you are a regular customer, you can be sure someone on staff knows your name. Lunch-time frequenters know the lunch menu by heart and are certain to be in and out within 40 minutes. Free Wi-Fi, as well as online ordering and delivery, allow for a convenient working lunch.

Neighbors know the best-kept Happy Hour secrets are the $5 Los Margaritas and $2 Street Tacos (try the flank steak or pork tenderloin).  Los Compadres recently added new items to the all day menu, such as the Veggie Enchiladas and a new Breakfast Burrito, and they have already become bestsellers alongside the tried and true favorites such as the Green Chile Burros, Cheese Crisps, Bean Burros, and Tacos.

Los Compadres is family-owned and operated, and you’re almost certain to see a member of the family when you visit.  In addition to running the restaurant, members of the Valdivia family are actively involved in the improvement of our 19 NORTH community.  David Valdivia is president of NABA (Northern Avenue Business Association) which partners with the 19 NORTH Vision team, the City of Phoenix Neighborhood Services, and the Phoenix Police Department regarding ongoing efforts to revitalize the area.  David’s daughter, Monica Merenda, helped kick-start their social media platforms.

In addition to a casual dining restaurant, Los Compadres offers catering and large party dining services. Contact Monica Merenda at (602)864-0043 for inquiries.

Postal Plus More • Cubbiehole Collectibles

By Beth Hilker

One visit to Postal Plus More, and you’ll quickly realize it is no ordinary shipping store. The owner, Mike Kerin, has an enthusiastic passion for life, his customers, Hot Wheels, collectibles, and rescue dogs.

Mike grew up in Wisconsin but has lived in Phoenix for 27 years. He purchased the postal store when he realized on-line shopping had created a boom in the shipping business. His goal was “to build the coolest shipping store ever,” and Postal Plus More is certainly not your corporate cookie-cutter franchise.

According to Mike, “If it fits through the door, it ships!” He is an authorized retailer for Federal Express, the United States Post Office, and DHL International. The store also offers other services, including fingerprinting, faxing, PO boxes, packaging, and shipping supplies.

Mike has a second business in the same store, called Cubbiehole Collectibles and has over 25,000 diecast cars in stock, including brand name new releases. “With Cubbiehole Collectibles, I’ve created an international destination for Hot Wheels and die cast collectors,” states Mike. “I’ve had folks from around the world visit, most recently from as far away as Germany.” Mike has an extensive knowledge of Hot Wheels trivia and claims to be well-known for his “massive inventory, great prices, and exceptional wheeling and dealing.”

Mike also has a huge heart. When visiting his store, you can’t miss his three adorable rescue dogs, Bandit, Shadow and Pookie. All three come to work with him each day.

My husband has been shipping packages with Mike for many years and rents a PO Box in the store. All three of my kids have enjoyed perusing his incredible collection of toy cars and memorabilia, and many Hot Wheels have made their way into my sons’ toy box. Mike Kerin’s Postal Plus More is a one-of-a-kind business and a wonderful asset to the 19 NORTH community. The next time you need to mail a package, drop on by!

Ilya’s Barber Shop

By Julie Meyer Taylor

While some people visit their hairdresser and share the latest news from their life, my husband visits his barber and tests out his Russian language skills. “I’m off to see Ilya! I wonder if he’ll notice I haven’t practiced lately,” he says, as he heads out the door.

My husband, John, studied Russian in college, and enjoyed it, but other than occasionally practicing with an audio language program, he does not have much opportunity to speak it. However, a few years ago he discovered Ilya’s Barber Shop. About once a month, when his hair needs a trim, he visits Ilya, Riva, and Masha, and takes a seat in one of their barber chairs. While the razor is humming, John speaks to them in Russian, and they critique, coach, and compliment him as they deem appropriate.

The owner, Ilya Mirzakandov, grew up in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and moved to the United States 25 years ago. Twenty years ago he moved to Phoenix and opened his barbershop on 19th Avenue and Northern. He has been serving Phoenix clients ever since. Ilya says he misses the open air markets and the beautiful landscapes of Tashkent, but enjoys living and working in Arizona. Riva, also from Tashkent, is another barber in the shop, and has been working with Ilya for 18 years. Masha is from Moscow and has many years of experience styling hair. Other hairdressers also work with them in the shop.

If you are looking for a new barber, or want to learn a few words of Russian while you get a trim, make an appointment, or just drop in.
